On the other hand, there are a lot of independent experiments developed by individuals and posted on the Internet that are on the cutting edge of today's research e.
Don't look for these in commercial manuals. Many school and university teachers tend to be dinosaurs and are reluctant to try something new and are slow to change.

I am a firm believer in integrated lecture-laboratory classes and utilize a range of experiments, some traditional and some non-traditional, in my classes. Some experiments are intended as introductions to course topics, some are used to reinforce concepts taught in class, and some are investigations to accompany course material. The coolest club of them all. As a part of your IB Chemistry class you'll cover an additional subject from the list below typically your teacher chooses which subject you'll cover. The investigations may be laboratory based or they may make use of simulations and data bases. Students develop the skills to work independently on their own design, but also collegiately, including collaboration with schools in different regions, to mirror the way in which scientific research is conducted in the wider community. The external assessment of chemistry consists of three written papers. In paper 1 there are 30 at SL or 40 at HL multiple-choice questions.
Paper 3 has two sections; Section A contains one data-based question and several short-answer questions on experimental work on the core and AHL material at HL. Section B contains short-answer and extended-response questions from each of the four options. Student work is internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB.Color change chemistry experiments are interesting, visually appealing, and illustrate a wide range of chemical processes.
These chemical reactions are visible examples of chemical changes in matter. For example, color change experiments can show oxidation-reductionpH changes, temperatures changes, exothermic and endothermic reactions, stoichiometryand other important concepts.
Colors associated with holidays are popular, such as red-green for Christmas, and orange-black for Halloween. There's a colorful reaction for just about any occasion. The Oscillating Clock or Briggs-Rauscher reaction changes color from clear to amber to blue. The reaction cycles between colors for a few minutes, eventually turning blue-black. For example, you can use phenolphthalein indicator to make water appear to turn into blood or wine and back to water clear - red - clear.
Turn Water into Blood or Wine. Transition metal complexes produce brightly-colored chemical solutions. One nice demonstration of the effect is called the Olympic Rings. Clear solutions change color to make the symbolic colors of the Olympic Games. Make Olympic Rings with Chemistry. Alchemists try to turn elements and other substances into gold.
It's a fascinating color change reaction. Turn Water into "Liquid Gold".
Here's a fun color change project in which a solution is poured from a water glass into a wine glass, tumbler, and beer glass.
Pre-treating the glassware causes the solution to change to appear to go from water to wine to milk to beer. This set of reactions is perfect for a magic show as well as a chemistry demonstration. You can use household ingredients to observe color change chemistry. For example, red cabbage juice changes color in response to pH changes when it is mixed with other chemicals.
No dangerous chemicals are needed, plus you can use the juice to make homemade pH paper, which will change color when used to test home or lab chemicals. The classic 'blue bottle' color change reaction uses methylene blue in a reaction that changes color from clear to blue and back to blue. You can use a pH indicator solution to display a rainbow of colors.
All you need is the right indicator and either a glass tube containing indicator solution and a pH gradient or else a series of test tubes at different pH values.
Two indicators that work well for this color change are Universal Indicator and red cabbage juice. Make a pH Rainbow Wand.
The Old Nassau reaction is popular as a Halloween chemistry demonstration because the chemical solution changes from orange to black. The traditional form of the demonstration uses mercury chloride, so this reaction is not commonly seen anymore because the solution shouldn't be poured down the drain.
Try the Old Nassau Reaction. The "Hot and Cold Valentine" is a temperature dependent color change that goes from pink to colorless and back to pink. The reaction uses the common indicator phenolphthalein. The "Vanishing Valentine" uses a resazurin solution that starts out blue. After a matter of minutes, this solution becomes clear.
When the flask is swirled, the contents change to pink. The liquid again becomes colorless and can be cycled through the clear-to-pink cycle multiple times. You can use indigo carmine to prepare a solution that changes color from green to red, making an excellent Christmas chemistry demonstration.

You don't need esoteric chemicals and a lab to have a good time with chemistry. Yes, your average fourth-grader can make slimebut that doesn't mean it's any less fun when you're older. Making a borax snowflake is a crystal-growing project that is safe and easy enough for kids.
You can make shapes other than snowflakes, and you can color the crystals. The snowflakes sparkle really nicely. If you use these as Christmas decorations and store them, the borax is a natural insecticide and will help keep your long-term storage area pest-free.
If you make the volcano and find the eruption to be disappointing, substitute these ingredients. You can clean pennies, coat them with verdigris, and plate them with copper.
This project demonstrates several chemical processes, yet the materials are easy to find and the science is safe enough for kids.
But we're not talking about fire here; the heat of a normal light bulb is all that's required to darken the lettering. Fire is fun. Colored fire is even better. These additives are safe. They won't, in general, produce smoke that is any better or worse for you than normal wood smoke. Depending on what you add, the ashes will have a different elemental composition from a normal wood fire, but if you're burning trash or printed material, you have a similar result.
This is suitable for a home fire or campfire, plus most chemicals are found around the house even of non-chemists. Heavier liquids sink to the bottom, while lighter less dense liquids float on top. Science experiments can taste good! This cooking chemistry project potentially uses no dishes, so cleanup can be very easy. It happens so quickly that you can form crystal towers as you pour the liquid into a dish.
You can set a bill on fire, yet it won't burn. Are you brave enough to try it? All you need is a real bill. Exploring separation chemistry with coffee filter chromatography is a snap.
You can also devise a project comparing the separation you get using different brands of paper towels. Leaves from outdoors can provide pigments. Frozen spinach is another good choice.
